The UBC Botanical Garden is a wonderful place to visit. Walking through the woods there yesterday, my father and I saw beautiful flowers and mossy stumps and majestic liana-covered trees, and heard birds chirping and the peaceful sound of little brooks and the crashing waves of the nearby ocean. There will be more flowers out as the weather gets warmer, but right now it’s a delight to see those that have already bloomed (magnolia, rhododendron, trillium, swamp lantern and more) and to enjoy the combination of bright sunshine and cool air.

Monochrome is my first love so that’s what I’m posting today, but I’ll put up some colour photos in a day or two.

blossoming cherry trees

Every spring, I anticipate the return of the cherry blossoms. Our beautiful trees, many of which were a gift from Japan, line some of the streets here in Vancouver and have a look and colours and fragrance like nothing else. Over the past couple of weeks, the blossoming trees have been spectacular.

The great blue herons nesting in Stanley Park here in Vancouver are magnificent. My father and I had a lovely time yesterday evening watching them. It’s a good time of year to visit because the foliage is not very full yet, so you can get a pretty clear view. You can learn more about them at the Stanley Park Ecology Society.

After times when life has felt dark and cold, signs of springtime are very welcome and bring a sense of hope and relief. Today: blue sky, bright sunshine, clear view of the mountains, and lovely little crocuses and snowdrops that are emerging all over the place.

It means a lot to be alive here and now

I have been away from my blog (and photography in general) for a few months, but hope to have a little more time for this now and into the new year.

Sometimes life gets complicated and difficult. This graffiti that my friend and I spotted on a rainy afternoon walk gives a good reminder at such times.
