more monochrome…

a few from New Mexico

I’m gradually sorting photos from past years including more that I took in New Mexico in 2008 and 2009. I’ve posted a few before; here are some more.

neighbourhood

This evening was beautiful and warm, more like summer than autumn, and I took a break to stroll around the neighbourhood, taking photos of whatever caught my eye.

Lost Ladybug Project

My husband mentioned something he saw on CBC television the other day about ladybugs. Apparently a lot of the domestic species have declined dramatically in recent years, while those imported for pest control are thriving.

A project to identify the location and kinds of ladybugs throughout North America — in the hopes of preventing species from going extinct — was set up some ten years ago, apparently, and anyone can learn from and contribute to it. Visit the Lost Ladybug Project to learn more.

the (lady)birds and the bees

I wandered up the street yesterday evening to look for bees, and found a garden a couple of blocks away where several of the beautiful insects were busy at work. They were moving so quickly from flower to flower that I mostly just watched, and took few photos of them.

I also spied a pretty little ladybird (often called ladybug), the brightly coloured Coccinellid beetle. Gardeners welcome these insects because they eat destructive pests like aphids.

more flowers added to galleries

If you’ve taken a look at this site, you can see that I’m pretty obsessed with photographing flowers. I’ve just updated the monochromatic flora and polychromatic flora galleries.

rainy day

It rained on and off all day yesterday, which made it harder to take photos, but resulted in shimmery colours and reflections of rain on the leaves and other surfaces. It was a lovely day to be in Stanley Park. Here are a few snapshots, including one of a cute creature we encountered — that photo is out of focus, alas, but is included here nonetheless.

peonies

The peonies in the neighbourhood are stunning right now. For weeks I’ve been checking the tightly furled buds, watching ants crawl in and out of them, and waited for them to bloom. Now they’ve blossomed and they’re gorgeous.
